Best Artworks at Inhotim – Yellow Route

The Yellow Route is the heart of Inhotim. It's easy to explore on foot and conveniently located near the main restaurants and food courts.

1. Troca-troca

A classic Inhotim postcard image, Troca-troca by Jarbas Lopes features Volkswagen Beetles, originally painted yellow, blue, and red. The artist swapped their body panels to create three multicolored cars. In 2002, the artist and a group of friends drove them on a road trip from Rio de Janeiro to Curitiba. You can find this installation along the Yellow Route at marker A6.

4. True Rouge Galery

Another breathtaking postcard view! Situated on the edge of a lake, the gallery’s architecture is a masterpiece in its own right. The installation True Rouge features suspended glass vessels reminiscent of a laboratory setup. Inside each vessel is a red liquid that drips down onto lower containers depending on the tilt. You can stroll through the installation to take in every detail up close. Located at G2 on the Yellow Circuit, it also features a great outdoor café—perfect for a relaxing break!

5. Cildo Meireles Galery

Located at G5 on the Yellow Circuit, this gallery is a prime example of why seeing all of Inhotim in a single day is nearly impossible. It houses three separate large-scale installations, so set aside plenty of time to explore it comfortably. Currently on display are: Através Desvio para o Vermelho and Glove Trotter. Each work occupies its own room, and while Desvio para o Vermelho is the most famous, all three are absolute must-sees!

Best Artworks at Inhotim – Pink Route

The Pink Route blends iconic central installations that are easy to walk to with must-see galleries set further out. For a full-day experience, combine this route with the Yellow Circuit. If you plan to visit the outer galleries, prepare for a bit of walking or consider buying a pass for the internal shuttle service.

6. Invenção da cor, penetrável Magic Square #5

In my opinion, this is the center point of Inhotim (Pink Route – A12), as it’s one of the first pieces you spot right after entering. It's a burst of color sitting on the shore of one of the main lakes. Built posthumously according to instructions left behind by Hélio Oiticica, color is the primary element here. Throughout the day, the structure reveals itself in different ways depending on how the light falls. As you wander through the park, you’ll keep catching glimpses of it—whether up close or from across the lake—making it impossible not to take dozens of photos!

7. Narcissus Garden

Also located in the central area of the park, this installation by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama references the myth of Narcissus, who fell in love with his own reflection in the water. It consists of 750 stainless steel spheres floating on a reflecting pool. Every sphere reflects your image back at you, and as the wind blows, they drift around, continually shifting the landscape (Pink Route – A17).

8. Matthew Barney Galery

Tucked away in a secluded spot surrounded by earth and thick greenery, this gallery looks like a mirrored geodesic dome from the outside. It creates a sense of dislocation, as if the structure doesn't belong in that environment. Inside, it houses a single work: De Lama Lâmina, created specifically for Inhotim, which highlights the artist’s environmental concerns (Pink Route – G12).

9. Claudia Andujar Galery

This gallery showcases over 400 photographs by the Swiss-born Brazilian artist Claudia Andujar, who documented the lives of the Yanomami universe, indigenous people in the northern Amazon rainforest from 1950 to 2010. While the photography is unmissable, the gallery's striking exposed-brick architecture is equally impressive.

Best Artworks at Inhotim – Orange Route

The Orange Route is the largest circuit and houses some of the park's most fascinating galleries! If possible, dedicate an entire day to this route and prepare for plenty of walking!

10. Viewing machine

A giant interactive kaleidoscope! Created by Olafur Eliasson (A13), this piece is set right in the middle of nature. Visitors can manually rotate and point the structure wherever they like, producing overlapping reflections that create whimsical, play-filled landscapes and photos.

11. Beam Drop Inhotim

This dramatic piece by Chris Burden was created using 71 steel beams salvaged from Belo HorizonteA crane lifted them 150 feet (45 meters) into the air and dropped them into a basin of wet concrete. Once the cement dried, the beams remained standing in a chaotic, random array. You can walk through them and admire the structure from multiple angles (Orange Route – A14).

12. Piscina

An interactive artwork where you can literally hop in and go for a swim! Features like this are what make Inhotim such a unique destination. The piece is a real-life translation of one of Jorge Macchi's watercolors. The artist frequently sketched everyday items in surreal scenarios, and on one occasion, he drew a swimming pool shaped like an address book. This installation (A15) is the physical manifestation of that imaginative sketch.

13. Untitled

Perched at the highest elevation point in Inhotim, this sculpture by Robert Irwin features angled walls lined with textured yellow glass panels . When direct sunlight hits the glass, it creates a gorgeous play of light and shadow. The surrounding area is serene and beautiful, and you might even spot local wildlife nearby, such as the seriema bird.

14. Adriana Varejão Galery

A major highlight of Inhotim, this gallery makes a striking impression through its architecture alone. Designed by architect Rodrigo Cerviño, it takes the form of a massive concrete block hovering over a reflecting pool. Inside, it houses powerful works by artist Adriana Varejão (Orange Route – G7).

15. Cosmococa Galery

Unlike traditional art exhibits, the Cosmococa gallery is designed for sensory fun! Save this stop for when you need a fun, relaxing break from walking. Inside are five interactive environments developed by Hélio Oiticica and Neville D’Almeida, including an indoor pool where visitors can swim. Blending music, vibrant colors, projection lighting, and physical sensations, Cosmococa is a trip in every sense (Orange Route – G15).

17. Cristina Iglesias Galery

This gallery house Vegetation Room Inhotim, an installation featuring polished stainless steel walls tucked deep inside a dense patch of forest. 18. Yayoi Kusaman Galery

One of the most popular galleries in all of Inhotim. Entry is strictly limited to a few visitors at a time, and depending on crowd sizes, you may need to reserve a time slot upon arrival—so plan ahead and don't leave it for the last minute! Inside, you'll find two signature installations by Yayoi Kusama: I’m Here, But Nothing(a room illuminated under black light) and Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity(an enchanting optical illusion created with hanging lamps, evoking infinity).

These are my top picks for the best artworks and galleries at Inhotim! The museum is constantly evolving, so exhibits may change over time. Be sure to check the official Inhitim Websitebefore your visit to see what’s currently on display.
